Why monocrystalline panels are the gold standard
All solar panels are not equal. Older polycrystalline and thin-film panels still appear on price-comparison sites, but their efficiency rarely exceeds 18%. Modern monocrystalline N-type TOPCon and HJT panels comfortably reach 22-23% efficiency, which means more electricity from the same Welsh rooftop.
On a typical 30m² roof in Cardiff, switching from a budget panel to a premium 440W mono panel adds the equivalent of nearly £200 of generation every year – over a 25-year lifetime that is £5,000 of extra savings for almost the same upfront investment.
Welsh Solar only installs Tier-1 panels from manufacturers with at least 12 years of UK trading history. Every panel comes with a 25-year linear performance warranty and a minimum 12-year product warranty.

How many panels do I need?
The simple answer: enough to offset your typical daytime use. The average three-bed Welsh home uses 3,500-4,000kWh a year. A 4kW system using ten 400W panels will generate roughly 3,800kWh annually, of which you can self-consume around 50% directly and the rest with a battery.
Larger homes with electric heating, heat pumps or EVs will benefit from 5-6kW systems. Commercial sites are sized to the half-hourly meter data we extract from your bill. Either way, we will produce a detailed yield projection based on your specific roof using MCS-approved PV*SOL design software.

Mounting & cabling
We use Schletter and K2 mounting systems on all installs – both German-engineered, Welsh-weather tested and carrying a 20-year warranty. Roof hooks are stainless steel A2, cabling is twin-core armoured to BS 7671 and every fixing is independently torque-tested before sign-off.
DC cabling is run inside the loft wherever possible to maximise lifespan. AC connections are made to a dedicated SP RCBO at your consumer unit, with a Type II SPD protecting your home and panels from lightning surges.
Inverters – the heart of every install
Panels generate DC electricity but your house runs on AC, so every solar system needs an inverter. We rate the inverter the most critical single component of any installation. A great panel paired with a poor inverter will lose 5-15% of its output every year and is often the first thing to fail.
Welsh Solar installs only Tier-1 inverters with at least a 10-year warranty: Solis, GivEnergy, Fronius, SolarEdge, Solax and SMA. For shaded roofs we recommend optimisers (Tigo, SolarEdge) or microinverters (Enphase) which allow each panel to operate independently. We will recommend the right architecture for your specific roof during the design phase.
Roof integration and aesthetics
Panel aesthetics matter, particularly on prominent or south-facing roof slopes. Welsh Solar offers three integration options: standard on-roof rails (lowest cost, suitable for most modern roofs), all-black panels with black frames and backsheets (premium look, around 10% more) or fully in-roof systems that replace the tiles and sit flush with the roof line (best for new builds and listed buildings).
We carry samples of every panel range and will bring them to your free survey so you can see exactly how they will look against your roof colour. Welsh slate, clay tile, concrete tile, EPDM and standing-seam roofs all have specific mounting kits – we use the right one every time.
Frequently asked questions
How long do solar panels last?
Premium Tier-1 panels are warranted for 25 years and many will still produce 85% of their original output at 30 years. We expect a 30-40 year operational life.
What is the difference between mono and poly panels?
Monocrystalline panels use a single silicon crystal and are more efficient (typically 22% vs 16%). They cost slightly more but generate more per m². We almost always recommend mono.
Do solar panels work in cloudy Welsh weather?
Yes – panels generate from daylight, not heat. They produce 20-25% of peak output even on overcast days, which is why annual yields in Wales remain strong despite our rain.
Do panels need cleaning?
Rarely – Welsh rainfall keeps panels clean on most pitched roofs. Flat-roof installs and ground arrays benefit from a clean every 2-3 years.
What happens if a panel fails?
Faulty panels are covered for free replacement under warranty. We maintain stock at our depot so most replacements are completed within seven days.
