Schools are excellent candidates for solar. Daytime term-time load profiles align well with generation, large flat or low-pitched roofs offer plenty of suitable mounting area, and the educational benefits of visible, working renewable energy are substantial.

School load patterns and term-time generation
School electrical demand is heavily concentrated during the school day, with lighting, IT, kitchens, sports facilities and ventilation driving most consumption. This works in solar's favour during term time but creates a challenge during long holiday periods when generation continues while consumption falls.
We model school year load profiles carefully so the system is sized to provide strong term-time self-consumption without producing huge unused exports during holidays. For schools where summer generation would otherwise be wasted, modest battery storage or community sharing arrangements can recover much of the lost value.
Salix and education funding routes
Salix Finance has historically provided interest-free loans to the public sector for energy efficiency and renewable projects, including solar. Welsh Government has run several specific funding rounds for school decarbonisation, sometimes with substantial grant elements. We track current schemes and identify all available funding at the design stage.
Where outright capital funding is unavailable, Power Purchase Agreements can be structured so that the school takes the benefit of cheaper power without finding the capital. We work with several PPA providers to bring such arrangements to schools that want the savings without the upfront cost.

Educational value and live displays
One of the most rewarding aspects of school solar is its educational role. Live generation displays in reception areas or science classrooms turn the system into a teaching resource for STEM subjects, geography, and citizenship lessons. Several of our school installations include interactive touchscreens showing live generation, CO2 saved, and historic performance graphs.

Working in operational school environments
Schools are particularly sensitive working environments. All of our installers are DBS-checked, we work in zoned site compounds isolated from pupil areas, and we plan disruptive activities such as roof access during holiday periods wherever possible. We have completed dozens of school projects without incident and are happy to provide references from headteachers and bursars.

What funding is available for school solar?
Funding varies year to year. Currently Salix loans, Welsh Government grants, and PPA structures are all available depending on the school's structure and capital position.
Will the installation disrupt teaching?
Most installation work happens on the roof and outside pupil areas, with disruption further minimised by working through holidays where practical. We have completed many schools with zero teaching disruption.
Can pupils see the data?
Yes. We offer optional live generation displays for receptions and classrooms that turn the system into a curriculum resource.
Are the panels safe in a school environment?
Solar panels and inverters have excellent safety records. Live electrical equipment is housed behind locked access in plant rooms, with no exposed working parts.

Solar is a core element of most school decarbonisation plans because of its rapid deployment, predictable returns, and visible commitment to sustainability.
For local authorities managing large school estates, we provide portfolio-level assessment services to prioritise buildings with the strongest payback and identify estate-wide programmes that can deliver the most carbon reduction per pound spent. This is often a better approach than treating individual schools in isolation, because shared procurement and design work spread the overheads across many sites.
Working safely in school environments
All our school installations are completed under strict safeguarding protocols. Operatives are DBS-checked, work in zoned compounds isolated from pupil areas with controlled access points, and follow site-specific induction procedures provided by each school's safeguarding lead. We never work in or near pupil areas during the school day, and any unavoidable internal work happens at weekends, evenings, or during holiday periods.
Insurance, sign-off and ongoing maintenance
School installations require careful handover documentation to support both the school's insurance arrangements and ongoing maintenance access. We provide complete electrical drawings, structural calculations, MCS certificates and component warranties at handover, along with annual inspection schedules and emergency contact arrangements. For local authority schools, we coordinate documentation with the authority's estates team to align with portfolio-level record keeping.
Curriculum integration and student engagement
Beyond the live generation displays we install in reception areas, the school's solar installation provides material for science, geography, design technology, and citizenship lessons. Several schools we have worked with have run student-led sustainability projects using the solar data, including comparisons with weather patterns, calculations of carbon savings against historic energy bills, and student-produced infographics for parent communications.
