Solar EV Charging Across Wales
Power your electric car directly from your roof. Welsh Solar designs solar-and-EV-charging packages that drive your effective fuel cost down to almost zero.
Combined solar, battery and EV charger packages from £8,995 fitted. MCS, NICEIC and OZEV approved.

What is solar EV charging?
Solar EV charging is the integration of your photovoltaic system with a smart car charger – usually a Zappi, Ohme or Easee unit. The charger monitors your home's energy in real time and automatically diverts only the surplus solar to your vehicle. Anything not used by the car is then stored in your battery or exported to the grid.
The benefit is straightforward. Electricity from the grid costs around 26p per kWh. Electricity from your own roof costs you nothing once the system is paid off. If you can shift even half of your weekly miles onto solar, you will halve your effective fuel bill overnight.
Welsh Solar has installed solar-charging packages for over 600 EV-driving families across Wales. Our system designers will model your annual driving pattern, your home's typical generation curve and your roof orientation to design a system that pays for itself within seven to ten years.
Three modes, one charger
Every solar-aware charger we install offers three operating modes. Eco+ uses only surplus solar – ideal if you are working from home and the car sits on the drive all day. Eco blends solar with cheap grid imports to top the car up faster. Fast charges flat-out at 7.4kW regardless of generation.
Pair the charger with an off-peak tariff such as Octopus Intelligent Go or EDF GoElectric and you can mix solar charging during the day with 7p per kWh grid imports overnight. Our recommended setup delivers an effective fuel price of around 2p per mile for most Welsh customers.
- Real-time energy diversion direct from PV
- Compatible with all CCS Type 2 EVs (Tesla, VW, BMW, Kia, Polestar, etc.)
- Free Wi-Fi connectivity and app control
- Built-in earth fault and PEN protection
- Optional pay-and-charge for businesses

Why bundle solar, battery and EV?
Buying solar, battery and EV charger as a single package saves typically £1,500-£2,000 compared to commissioning them separately. More importantly, the components are configured to talk to each other from day one. Energy flows are optimised by a single energy management system rather than competing controllers.
All our combined packages come with a single point of contact for warranty and aftercare, a single set of paperwork (MCS, DNO, building control), and a single Welsh Solar engineer running the project from survey to handover.

Typical packages
Our most popular bundle is the 'Solar + EV Starter' at 4kW PV plus a 7.4kW Zappi V2 for £6,995 fully fitted including VAT (where eligible). Adding a 5.2kWh GivEnergy battery bumps that to £9,995. Bigger 6kW PV + 10kWh battery + 22kW charger commercial bundles start at £19,950.

Real-world savings for Welsh EV owners
We track the savings of every Welsh Solar EV customer who opts in to our monitoring service. The headline number is striking: customers with 4kW PV + 5kWh battery + Zappi charger pay an average of just 2.3p per mile to run their EV, compared to 14-18p per mile for an equivalent petrol car. Over 12,000 miles a year that saves the typical family around £1,800.
These numbers will vary depending on tariff and driving pattern. But even allowing for cloudier years and longer commutes, the worst-case effective fuel cost we have ever recorded for a fully kitted-out solar EV setup is under 6p per mile – still less than half of running petrol.
Heat pumps, EVs and solar together
More than 30% of our 2026 customers are now adding a heat pump alongside their solar and EV. The three technologies work brilliantly together: solar provides daytime power, the battery shifts it to evening, the heat pump heats the home and the EV is charged from any remaining surplus.

Frequently asked questions
Can I charge my EV from solar alone?
Yes – with a solar-aware charger like Zappi, surplus PV is diverted directly to your car. From spring to autumn most Welsh customers cover their commute entirely from solar.
What size system do I need to charge an EV?
A 4kW system can comfortably charge a typical EV for the average UK mileage (~7,400 miles/year). For larger vehicles or longer commutes we recommend 5-6kW with a battery.
Do I need a battery to charge from solar?
No, but a battery doubles your self-consumption. Without one, you can only charge when the sun is shining; with one, you can charge overnight from stored solar energy.
How fast will it charge my car?
A 7.4kW charger delivers about 25 miles of range per hour. Most overnight charges add 100-150 miles, even in low-sun winter months.
Will solar EV charging work in winter?
Generation is reduced but a properly-sized battery and cheap overnight tariff combination delivers low-cost charging year-round.
