When the sun shines on your roof in Cardiff, Carmarthen or Conwy, your solar panels generate power that flows first to your appliances and then either to a battery or out to the National Grid. Without a battery, anything you do not use immediately is exported – usually at a fraction of the price you pay to buy it back in the evening.
A modern lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery solves that problem. It captures the surplus, holds it through the day and releases it the moment your household or business demand peaks. What size battery do I need?
For most three- and four-bedroom Welsh homes a 5kWh battery is the sensible entry point. It will typically cover an evening's lighting, cooking, TV and washing with energy generated during the day. Larger families, electric-vehicle owners and heat-pump households usually benefit from 9-15kWh.
Commercial customers – schools, hotels, factories – often install 30kWh+ banked systems that can also provide UPS-grade resilience for tills, fridges and IT. During your free survey we will run a 12-month usage simulation using your actual half-hourly meter data, so you only pay for the capacity you genuinely need.

Installation and aftercare
Most installations take a single day. A Welsh Solar engineer will mount the battery indoors (utility room, garage, plant room) or on a sheltered exterior wall, run a short cable to your existing consumer unit and commission the system on your home Wi-Fi. We complete all MCS, DNO and G98/G99 paperwork on your behalf.
Every customer receives a full handover, the manufacturer app set up on their phone and a 12-month optimisation review free of charge. If anything changes – a new EV, a baby on the way, a heat pump – we will retune your battery schedule so you keep saving.
Smart energy management across Welsh tariffs
Pairing a battery with a time-of-use tariff is where the real savings start. Octopus Flux for instance pays 30p+ during peak hours but only charges 15-17p during off-peak. With a battery you can charge during the cheap window, run your home and export during the expensive window. Battery safety and siting
LFP batteries are inherently the safest lithium chemistry available. Even with deliberate abuse, they do not enter the thermal runaway state that nickel-based cells can. That said, every battery we install is sited in accordance with BS 7671 amendment 3 and the IET Code of Practice for Battery Storage. We do not install batteries in habitable rooms or below escape routes.

How long does a solar battery last?
Modern LFP batteries are warranted for 10 years and typically deliver 6,000+ full charge cycles, which equates to 12-15 years of daily use. Capacity at end of warranty is usually still 70% of original.
Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?
Yes. We fit AC-coupled batteries that work alongside almost any existing inverter. Most retrofits are completed in a single day with minimal disruption.
Will a battery power my house in a blackout?
Most units we install offer optional emergency power supply (EPS) – when the grid fails, your battery will keep essential circuits like lights, fridge and broadband running.
Are batteries safe to install indoors?
Yes – LFP chemistry is the safest lithium technology on the market and all batteries we install carry full UKCA certification. We site them away from living areas wherever possible.
Do I need planning permission?
No. Solar batteries are classed as permitted development across Wales for both domestic and most commercial properties.
