Why solar makes sense for Welsh homes

Energy bills have moved permanently higher. The Ofgem default tariff that was 12p per kWh in 2020 is now 25-27p per kWh and rising again. The average Welsh household using 3,800kWh of electricity a year is paying over £1,000 just for power – ignoring gas and standing charges entirely.

Solar panels eliminate a large chunk of that bill. A typical 4kW solar system in Wales generates 3,400-3,800kWh per year, roughly the same as a three-bed family home consumes. Combined with a battery you can self-consume 80%+ of what you generate and effectively flatten your daytime electricity bill.

More importantly, you lock in your energy cost for the next 30 years. Whatever happens to gas prices, grid charges or carbon taxes, the sunshine on your roof remains free.

Tailored to your home, not a one-size-fits-all

Every house is different. A south-facing detached house in Newport will need a very different system to a north-facing terrace in Bangor or an exposed bungalow in Pembrokeshire. Our design team uses MCS-approved PV*SOL software to produce a tailored proposal for your specific roof, orientation, shading and consumption pattern.

We have specific design playbooks for every common Welsh roof type: Welsh slate, Marley clay tile, Redland concrete, flat EPDM, GRP, lead-flashed dormers and listed-building integrated systems. Whatever your roof, we have done it before and have the right kit on the van.

  • Pitched roof (slate, tile, metal) – on-roof rails
  • Flat roof (EPDM, GRP, asphalt) – ballasted A-frames
  • Listed building – in-roof or integrated tiles
  • Detached garage / outbuilding – wall-mounted or ground array
  • Driveway or large garden – solar car port or ground array

Domestic system packages

Most Welsh homes fall into one of three sizing buckets. A 3-4kW system suits one- and two-person households with low daytime usage. A 5-6kW system fits families and EV owners. A 7-12kW system is for heat-pump or all-electric homes with significant evening or year-round load.

Prices for fully-installed residential systems start from £4,995 for a 3kW install with no battery, through £8,995 for a 4kW + 5kWh battery package up to around £14,995 for a 6kW + 10kWh + EV charger bundle. All prices include VAT (where eligible at 0%), MCS paperwork, DNO notification and a 24-month workmanship guarantee.

The Welsh Solar promise

Choose Welsh Solar for your residential installation and you get a single team from start to finish. The designer who surveys your home is the engineer who installs it. Our customer-service team is based in Wales – not an outsourced call centre – and we respond to most emails within four working hours.

Every install carries our 12-year workmanship guarantee on top of the 25-year panel and 10-year battery warranties from the manufacturers. We also include a free 12-month optimisation visit during which we will retune your system, update firmware and answer any questions you have built up over your first year of generation.

Funding your home solar system

There are multiple ways to fund a domestic solar install. The most cost-effective is cash from savings: with savings rates of 4-5% and solar saving you 25-30% on every pound spent, the maths favours investing the money in your roof rather than your ISA.

If you prefer to spread payments, Welsh Solar offers 0% finance over 24 months on most installations, and longer-term FCA-regulated finance through Novuna and Kandoo (typical APR 9.9%). We will explain all options at the point of quotation – there is no pressure either way.

Solar plus a heat pump

If you are also considering a heat pump, now is the perfect moment to install solar at the same time. A heat pump increases your home's electricity use by around 4,000kWh per year – roughly doubling typical consumption. Without solar, that drives your bills up significantly; with solar plus battery, the heat-pump-driven extra demand can largely be met from free roof energy.

Welsh Solar partners with three accredited Welsh heat-pump installers and can coordinate a combined design if you wish. Doing both at once also typically attracts a 0% VAT rate on the entire renewable package, saving thousands.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a domestic solar system cost?

Fully installed 4kW systems start from £4,995 without battery, £8,995 with a 5kWh battery. Larger systems with EV chargers start at £14,995.

Will I really save money on bills?

Yes – the average Welsh household saves £850-£1,400 a year on electricity bills with solar plus battery. Payback is typically 6-9 years.

Is solar worth it on a north-facing roof?

It can be. A north-facing roof typically yields 55-60% of a south-facing roof, which is often still economic with battery storage and current SEG rates.

Do I need planning permission?

Most domestic solar installs are permitted development across Wales. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some national park properties require planning – we handle this for you.

How disruptive is installation?

Most domestic installs take a single day. The only access we need is to your loft, your fuse board and your roof. Scaffolding is delivered the day before.
