About Bridgend
Bridgend takes its name from the bridge over the River Ogmore that has carried the main east-west road across south Wales since at least the fourteenth century. The Welsh name, Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr, has the same meaning. The town developed as a market centre at the meeting of routes between Cardiff, Swansea, and the Llynfi valley, and the medieval New Castle on the southern bank remains a scheduled monument today.
The industrial revolution turned Bridgend into a junction town for the south Wales coal trade. The construction of the Llynfi Valley Railway in 1861 connected the coal-rich upper valleys with the docks at Port Talbot and Barry, and the town grew rapidly as a service centre for the surrounding industrial communities. During the Second World War, Bridgend was home to the largest Royal Ordnance Factory in the United Kingdom, employing nearly 40,000 people at its peak in the manufacture of munitions.
Modern Bridgend has around 50,000 residents in the town and 145,000 in the wider county borough. The Ford engine plant at Waterton, which closed in 2020, was a major local employer for decades, and the area has worked hard to attract new industrial investment in its place. Bridgend remains a strong commuter town for Cardiff and Swansea, and offers excellent transport links via the M4 and the Great Western Main Line.
Why solar makes sense in Bridgend
Bridgend sits in the heart of the south Wales solar belt, with annual irradiation figures comparable to Cardiff. The town benefits from a slightly less coastal climate than Swansea, which means lower humidity levels and consequently good panel performance throughout the year.
The housing stock spans Victorian terraces in the central wards, interwar semis in Coity and Cefn Glas, post-war estate housing at Brackla, Litchard, and Wildmill, and substantial new development at Broadlands and Sarn. Newer properties tend to offer the best roof profiles for solar — modern construction, no mature tree shading, and clear south-facing aspects.
We cover Bridgend, Brackla, Coity, Litchard, Pencoed, Pyle, Porthcawl, and the wider Bridgend county borough from Maesteg in the north to Porthcawl on the coast. The local DNO is National Grid Electricity Distribution.

Frequently asked questions about solar in Bridgend
Is Bridgend a good location for solar?
Yes, Bridgend receives strong solar irradiation comparable to Cardiff, with a slightly drier climate that helps panel performance. Typical 4 kW systems produce 3,400-3,600 kWh per year.
Do you cover Porthcawl?
Yes, Porthcawl is fully within our service area. Coastal installations on the Porthcawl seafront benefit from marine-grade components which we specify as standard for properties within a kilometre of the open coast.
What about the Brackla and Broadlands estates?
Modern estate housing across Bridgend offers excellent conditions for solar — clean roof pitches, no mature tree shading, and consistent south-facing aspects. We complete many installations on these estates each year.
Do you cover the valleys north of Bridgend?
Yes, our service area extends across the whole Bridgend county borough, including Maesteg, Pontycymer, and the Llynfi and Garw valleys.
What's the typical timescale in Bridgend?
From accepting the quote to commissioning is typically 4-6 weeks. DNO approval is the longest single step. Physical installation takes 1-2 days for a standard residential system.
What to consider when planning solar in Bridgend
Bridgend's mixed housing stock means that the right approach varies considerably between property types. For a modern estate house at Brackla or Broadlands, the conversation is usually about how many panels fit comfortably on the south or west-facing roof and whether the budget extends to a battery. For an older Victorian terrace in the central wards, we tend to look at smaller arrays of high-efficiency panels combined with careful integration of the existing electrical infrastructure, which may need minor upgrading to accept the inverter and isolation switching.
Coastal properties at Porthcawl and along the Bridgend county coastline benefit from our standard marine specification: stainless steel hardware, aluminium framing in marine grades, and DC connectors rated for higher humidity environments. The small extra cost more than pays back over the lifetime of the system, particularly given the prevailing south-westerly winds that drive salt-laden air across the area for much of the year.
