About Bangor
Bangor in Gwynedd is one of the smallest cities in Britain by population but has a history stretching back to the sixth century, when Saint Deiniol founded a monastic community on a site near the present-day cathedral. The name itself is thought to derive from the wattle enclosure that surrounded the original monastic site, and Bangor Cathedral, rebuilt several times over the intervening centuries, remains the oldest continuously used cathedral in Britain.
The city sits on the Menai Strait, the narrow stretch of water that separates Anglesey from mainland Wales, and grew significantly in the nineteenth century with the opening of Thomas Telford's Menai Suspension Bridge in 1826 and Robert Stephenson's Britannia Tubular Bridge in 1850. The slate industry of the surrounding mountains brought further trade through Port Penrhyn, and University College Bangor — now Bangor University — opened in 1884, establishing the city as the academic centre of north Wales.
Modern Bangor has around 18,000 residents, with the student population pushing the figure higher during term time.
