Monocrystalline vs Polycrystalline Solar Panels

When you start researching solar, one of the first technical distinctions you will encounter is monocrystalline versus polycrystalline panels. Both are silicon-based, both work on the same photovoltaic principle, and both will generate electricity reliably for decades. But there are practical differences that affect what we install on Welsh roofs.

For nearly all current residential installations in Wales we now use monocrystalline panels, but the reasons are worth understanding so you can make an informed choice and know what you are paying for.

How the two are manufactured

Monocrystalline panels use cells cut from a single silicon crystal. The manufacturing process is more expensive because each cell is grown as a single uniform crystal, but the result is higher efficiency and a uniform black appearance. The leading edge of monocrystalline technology currently achieves cell efficiencies of 22-23%.

Polycrystalline panels use cells cast from multiple silicon crystals melted together. The process is faster and cheaper, but the cells have a slightly mottled blue appearance and somewhat lower efficiency, typically around 17-19%. Polycrystalline dominated the residential market until around 2018, when falling monocrystalline costs made mono panels the preferred choice for most installations.

Efficiency and how it affects your roof

A more efficient panel produces more power per square metre of roof. For a Welsh property with limited roof area — common on terraces and townhouses — this matters. A 400 W monocrystalline panel takes up around 1.95 m² of roof; a 350 W polycrystalline panel of similar physical dimensions produces 12-15% less power, which over 25 years adds up to thousands of kWh of foregone generation.

For a property with abundant roof area — a bungalow or modern detached house — the efficiency difference matters less because you can simply install more panels. The economic comparison then shifts to price-per-watt rather than efficiency, and the gap narrows considerably.

What we typically install in Wales

For nearly all current installations, we specify monocrystalline panels from established Tier 1 manufacturers — JA Solar, Trina, LONGi, Jinko, REC, or similar. The price premium over polycrystalline is now small, the efficiency advantage is meaningful, and the all-black appearance is what most homeowners prefer.

There are still niche cases where polycrystalline is the right choice — typically very large-area installations where price-per-watt is the dominant concern, such as some agricultural ground-mount projects. For residential and most commercial rooftop work in Wales, monocrystalline is the default and the right default.

Beyond mono vs poly: bifacial, half-cell, TOPCon

The mono-versus-poly distinction is increasingly being overtaken by other technology differences. Modern monocrystalline panels often use half-cell construction (cutting each cell in half to reduce internal resistance and improve performance), PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) coatings to capture more light, and increasingly TOPCon or HJT technologies for even higher efficiency.

Bifacial panels — which generate from both faces — are becoming common in commercial installations where ground-mount or carport mounting allows light to reach the back of the panel. For residential rooftop installations, bifacial offers limited advantage because the back of the panel is shaded by the roof itself.

Which is better for my Welsh home, mono or poly?

How much more do monocrystalline panels cost?

What about newer technologies like TOPCon?

TOPCon and HJT are next-generation monocrystalline variants offering slightly higher efficiency, typically 23-24%. The price premium over standard mono is modest and we increasingly specify these on premium projects.

Brand considerations beyond mono vs poly

The bigger differentiator between solar panels these days is the manufacturer tier and the warranty terms, not the cell technology. Tier 1 manufacturers — JA Solar, Trina, LONGi, Jinko, REC, Canadian Solar, Q Cells, JinkoSolar, and a handful of others — have the manufacturing scale, financial stability, and quality systems to back 25-year warranties credibly. Tier 2 and Tier 3 manufacturers often offer cheaper panels with nominally similar specifications, but the practical risk of warranty failure is significantly higher.

We specify Tier 1 monocrystalline panels for almost all installations. The price difference over Tier 2 alternatives is modest, the long-term reliability is significantly better, and the warranty claims process (if ever needed) is straightforward with established UK importers.

For premium projects, we offer panels from REC or LG (where still available), which provide higher efficiency, better low-light performance, and 25-year product warranties (as opposed to the more common 12-year product / 25-year performance split). The premium over standard Tier 1 panels is around 15-25%.
